Intro

A crypto exchange with over a million users, and a web platform that no longer matched how they traded

Our client is one of the largest digital asset platforms in Europe. More than a million people use it to trade over 50 coins and tokens against the euro and other fiat currencies, stablecoins, BTC and ETH. The exchange is supervised under EU anti-money-laundering rules and has grown beyond trading into fiat exchange and crypto payments.

Its web platform was strong. But crypto never sleeps, and neither do its users: prices move at 3 a.m., on the commute, in the middle of a meeting. People were checking the market on their phones and then walking to a laptop to actually trade. The brief sounded simple: put the exchange in their pocket.

The real question was harder. How do you fit a professional trading terminal on a six-inch screen without scaring away a first-time buyer, or slowing down someone who trades every day?

Challenges

One app, two very different people, and zero room for doubt

The newcomer and the pro
A first-time buyer wants to buy a little bitcoin without learning what an order book is. An active trader wants charts, depth and order entry within thumb reach, in as few taps as possible. Designing for one usually means failing the other.

Trust is the product
This app holds people’s savings. A confusing screen, an unclear fee or a spinner at the wrong moment does not feel like a UX bug; it feels like risk. Every interaction had to feel safe, without burying users in security steps.

Peaks, not averages
Crypto traffic is spiky. When the market moves, everyone opens the app at the same second. The app had to stay fast exactly when it matters most.

Solution

We started with people, not screens: a design thinking process from first interview to release

1. Empathize
Before drawing a single screen, we looked at how people actually trade: what they check first, where they hesitate, why they abandon a purchase and what makes them call support. We worked side by side with the exchange’s product, support and compliance teams, who know where users get stuck.

2. Define
We turned what we learned into a few sharp problem statements, for example: “A first-time buyer should be able to make their first purchase in minutes, without jargon.” and “An active trader should see the chart, the order book and the order button on one screen.”

3. Ideate
In joint workshops with the client we explored many concepts for the core flows: onboarding and identity verification, deposits, the buy flow and the trading screen. Ideas were judged against the problem statements, not personal taste.

4. Prototype
The strongest concepts became clickable prototypes long before any code was written, so we could change direction in hours instead of sprints.

5. Test and iterate
We put prototypes in front of real users, watched where they hesitated and refined the flows round after round until both the newcomer and the pro moved through them without help.

Then we built it
The result is a mobile app with two speeds: a simple, guided buy flow for newcomers and a full trading screen with real-time charts, order book and fast order entry for active traders. Security is designed into the experience: two-factor authentication, encryption and multi-layered identity verification that protect funds without getting in the way. Under the hood, a scalable architecture keeps the app responsive when trading volumes spike.

Results

The exchange in every user's pocket

A trading experience on par with the web
Users can follow the market, trade and manage their portfolio from their phone, with the same functionality as the web platform and none of the clutter.

More users, more trading
The app opened the exchange to people who would never install a trading terminal, and contributed to growth in both users and trading volume.

Trust that shows
Stable performance at market peaks and visible, unobtrusive security earned positive feedback from users and strengthened confidence in the platform.

Conclusion

What we would tell any exchange building a mobile app

Design for two audiences at once. Beginners and pros need different paths through the same product. Make both first-class.

Treat security as part of the UX. The safest flow is the one users understand and do not try to work around.

Prototype before you code. Testing ideas with real users early is the cheapest way to build an app a million people will open every day.
