Creating your idea matrix in 6 simple steps

If you have no experience creating a business idea matrix, here is a step-by-step guide to facilitate this process.

1. Select the ideas to include in your matrix

You can include multiple startup ideas in your matrix and make it work, but you’ll still need to filter them to select the most innovative or creative ones. You can use help from fellow idea generators or colleagues: let them vote, rate, and comment on the submitted ideas to select the most viable ones. 

At this stage, you might find some "quick wins" that you won't need to approve through the evaluation matrix. However, bigger and more extraordinary ideas will still need to come all the way.

2. Choose your criteria for idea screening

The next step in creating an idea matrix is selecting criteria for scoring those ideas. You have to choose the appropriate benchmarks. This way, they'll properly align with your business goals and strategy. Though companies select different criteria depending on their business type, there are still some general criteria worth picking:

  • Time efficiency 

How long will planning, implementing, and generating results for each idea take? Would the time investment correspond with its value?

  • Cost efficiency 

How much would it cost to bring an idea to life? Big ideas can be worth big investments, but you’ll need to make sure they pay out as much as they should.

Is there someone who can take ownership of this idea and manage the whole realization process until the end? Any innovation has to be managed, so make sure the idea you want to approve is manageable.

  • Alignment with strategic goals

Does this idea fit your strategic direction? The best ideas in the world won't work if there's a mismatch between your vision and the idea you're trying to implement.

3. Rate your selection criteria

Next, you’ll need to establish a rating scale for your startup matrix. For instance, you can use a scale from 1 to 5 (5 means the highest importance). Add these ratings below each criterion in the matrix. For example, if you consider cost critical for rating each idea, its ranking should be 5. If the implementation time is less important, you might give it a low rank, like 2.

4. Give each idea a score

Once you’ve given each criterion a score, you can evaluate each idea based on the selected criteria. You can give them a score from 1 to 5 (1 — least effective, 5 — most effective) on how well an idea meets every benchmark.

5. Calculate the weighted score for each idea

Finally, you have to determine your idea’s weighted score for each criterion.

To evaluate each idea's weighted score, find the weighted score for each idea in terms of each criterion first. To do this, multiply each criterion's rank by each idea's score in that particular criterion. For example, if your cost criterion has a rank of 3 and idea A has scored 2 in the cost criterion, this idea's weighted score in terms of cost will be 6 (3 x 2). Repeat the same for each idea across each criterion.

6. Sum the weighted scores and compare

Finally, you have to sum the weighted scores across each criterion for every idea in your matrix and add these scores to the final column of your matrix. Compare these scores to define the most and least viable ideas.
